Buku Perutusan Dato NC 2012 - Akademia Baru: Memartabat UTM Berjenama Global 2012-2020


Buku Perutusan Dato' Naib Canselor telah dilancarkan baru-baru ini bersempena Perjumpaan bulanan bersama Dato' NC dan amanat tahun baru beliau. Edisi kali ini agak menarik kerana staf perlu membayar untuk mendapatkan buku berkenaan dengan nilai RM25 dan tidak lagi percuma seperti tahun-tahun sudah. Langkah awal ke arah mencorak minda staf UTM.

Banyak startegi-sttategi utama yang ditekankan di dalam buku ini dan yang pantinya, beliau mensasarkan prestasi kecemerlangan UTM pada tahun ini sehingga tahun 2020. Panduan utama dalam merealisasikan penanda aras yang tinggi oleh UTM adalah berpandukan kepada strategi dan konsep yang disarankan buku Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) tulisan Dr. W. Chan Kim dan Renee Mauborgne.


Antara kupasan buku perutusan tahun baru 2012 ini adalah:
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) will focus on strategies to be a Global Brand in order to stay competitive in the face of increasingly global challenge. As part of its brand promise for the year to be innovative, entrepreneurial and global, UTM will continue with its differentiation and impactful strategies, targeting to be the top 50 in world ranking by 2020.

The criteria to be in the top 50 ranking entail the need for indepth and vibrant  knowledge culture, outstanding and renowned academic excellence, and impactful and dynamic research innovation. The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the composite index to be developed to become the top 50 university including enhancing quality, strengthening recognition, promoting uniqueness and providing affordable pricing.
 By 2020, UTM targets to have 70 percent or 14,000 postgraduates, with 7,000 of whom are Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students and the number of undergraduates will be reduced to 8,000.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the need for UTM to adopt the Blue Ocean Strategy to make competition irrelevant, create uncontested market space, create and capture new demands, break the value/cost trade off and align the whole organization in pursuit of differentiation and low cost.

Based on the concept of New Academia, UTM adopts a different perspective and mindset in its strategies and approaches as problems should be seen as opportunities  which require new approaches to creativity and innovation. There is a need to break out of the traditional, hierarchical model and to go beyond the limits and way above the horizon to make a difference.
